A local farmer is experimenting with a drainage technique that could lead to greater crop yields and better water quality.
For decades farmers have used ditches carved in the land and underground drains to direct the flow of rain water out of their fields. Elyria farmer Wayne Simms has installed a device that helps him manage the moisture in about 30 acres he farms north of Russia Road in Carlisle Township.
The managed drainage system, installed in 2015, was the first of its kind in Lorain County.
